Apple Music is the latest service to slash prices in India

Apple Music has slashed its prices in India, following price cuts by local streaming services JioSaavn and Gaana. Apple Music is now being offered for 99 rupees a month, down from 120 rupees a month.
While many outlets are reporting the price cut is in direct response to Spotify and YouTube Music’s recent launches in India, this is only part of the story. There are several India-specific streaming services that are incredibly popular within the country, like JioSaavn and Gaana. These companies are already established and have tens of millions of users. Gaana, in particular, counts 80 million users, which is about half of India’s active music streaming market.
Over two weeks ago, JioSaavn quietly offered a promotion that reduced its price, dropping its annual fee from 999 rupees  to 299 rupees. Many missed it because the company only advertised the discount to a portion of its user base. At the time, a rep for JioSaavn told The Verge: “We often run various limited-time promotions based on a specific segment of our user base that we want to reach. The discount is technically available to everyone, but we only publicize it within the specific user group that it’s designed for.” In response, Gaana ran its own promotion to match JioSaavn, cutting its annual fee from 1,098 rupees  to 299 rupees. Both services left the pricing for monthly subscriptions untouched at 99 rupees.
A race to the bottom in an effort to establish India’s new pecking order in streaming music
These two promotions were likely spurred by Spotify and YouTube Music’s entries into India, and now, Apple Music is doing the same. Its monthly fee now matches local player pricing and YouTube Music, and this also makes it cheaper than Spotify’s monthly plan in India, which costs 119 rupees.
India is a market that’s been called music’s “sleeping giant,” with the world’s second-largest smartphone market and falling data rates that see millions of new people sign up for online services every month. While the customer base for streaming services in India is exponentially growing, subscription income for these services isn’t rising in tandem. Less than 1 percent of streaming music subscribers pay for a standalone subscription in India, and about 14 percent pay for music through a bundled subscription (such as Amazon Prime or via a mobile contract).
Those in India who do pay for music streaming don’t pay much in comparison to other countries, and now they’re paying even less. It appears that all of these new entrants in the country’s growing market are creating a race to the bottom in an effort to establish India’s new pecking order in streaming music.

Netflix testing weekly subscriptions plan in India, beginning at Rs 65

Netflix’s new Rs 65 weekly subscription will offer individual viewing only on mobile devices. What this essentially means is that users will only be able to access Netflix’s content through their smartphones and tablets and no on laptops, PCs or TVs. Netflix is also trying out three more weekly plans - Rs 125 Basic plan, Rs 165 Standard plan and Rs 200 Premium plan.

With competition from Apple set to rise in the near future, Netflix is now looking to attract as many customers as possible before the streaming game gets more fierce. The video streaming service is now trialling new subscription plans in India which will enable weekly payments to make it more affordable to watch TV Shows, documentaries and movies on Netflix.
Netflix’s new Rs 65 weekly subscription will offer all the content that’s available on its other subscription plans but with a catch. The 7-day subscription will only offer individual viewing only on mobile devices. What this essentially means is that users will only be able to access Netflix’s content through their smartphones and tablets and no on laptops, PCs or TVs.
Another limitation to the Rs 65 a week plan will be that the content being streamed on the mobile device will not be offered in HD or UHD quality. This means users will be limited to SD quality when viewing their favourite TV shows and movies. This will be similar to the Rs 250 monthly plan which was being tested last month.
Netflix is also reported to be trying out three more weekly plans, similar to their monthly plan. These include the Rs 125 Basic plan, Rs 165 Standard plan and Rs 200 Premium plan, which offer the same benefits as their respective monthly plans but only for a week.
The Rs 125 weekly basic plan will offer SD streaming for an individual user across all devices, be it smartphones, tablets, PCs or TV. The 165 Standard weekly plan will offer HD streaming on two screens simultaneously across all devices. The Rs 200 Premium weekly plan will offer the same benefits as the Rs 800 monthly premium plan and will provide simultaneous viewing on 4 screens across any kind of device for a week.
The Rs 65 mobile-only plan, 125 Basic plan, Rs 165 Standard plan and Rs 200 Premium plan will be positioned adjacent to the monthly subscriptions of Rs 250, Rs 500 Basic, Rs 650 Standard and Rs 800 Premium monthly plans in India. Users will soon be able to choose between weekly billing and monthly billing respective of their consumptive needs.
